Themes Of Hidden Figures Directed By Theodore Melfi
The 2016 historical / drama film, Hidden Figures directed by Theodore Melfi explores the themes of racism and sexism in America during the 1960ââ¬â¢s. These themes expresses Theodore Melfiââ¬â¢s intention of this film is displaying that sexism and racism is hard to abolish. Melfi uses visual and verbal features of dialogue, costume and symbolism to contribute to the directorââ¬â¢s intention. A verbal feature Melfi uses to show the themes of sexism and racism is dialogue. This use of this verbal feature helps establish Theodore Melfiââ¬â¢s true intention for this film that sexism and racism is hard to abolish. For example, when Katherine Johnson expresses her frustrations to her boss Mr. Harrison by saying; ââ¬Å"Lord knows you donââ¬â¢t pay the coloured enough toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦A visual feature Melfi uses to show the his intention for the film is costume, this helps highlights the themes of racism and sexism. For example in the film the white men wear white tops and a tie, this shows that these men uphold a status of that they are knowledgeable. Meanwhile the white women wear a dress or a twin set, heels and pearls. These costumes displays the sexism during that time period as men and women are expected to wear those types of clothing. I believe this is still a factor in todayââ¬â¢s society for instance girls in schools have to wear skirts or dre sses and boys have to wear either shorts or pants. The girls uniform restricts movement and increases the chances of hypothermia. I believe that girls should be focused on their education instead of concerning about their modesty in these expected uniforms. Womenââ¬â¢s clothing, from skirts to heels, was designed to restrict womenââ¬â¢s movement, whereas menââ¬â¢s clothing is all about freedom. The effect of the use of costumes is that it shows that sexism is still present in todayââ¬â¢s society as that it restricts freedom and expressing or identifying who you are as a person. The costumes also identifies the theme of racism as the African American women could not afford to own pearls. For example when the N.A.S.A workers lined up to meet the potential astronauts, the males, white females and African American women were segregated into different sections. The costumes made the racism and sexism obvious. Alex works in a manufacturing plant that is barely staying afloat, and his boss has left it up to him to keep the business running with a three-month time span to do it in. Even though ââ¬Å"The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvementâ⬠is just a story, it is still very relatable to businessmen, businesswomen, and students. The three categories of constraints that are shown in the story are knowledge, material, and supplier. The knowledge constraint caused for the manufacturing plant to not beâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It also is not efficient to have all of these materials on hand, especially when they are not even being used for multiple months. When Alex was on the hike with the Boy Scouts he was equating what was going on during the hike to the manufa cturing plant and realized that at the plant the inventory is going up, throughput is going down, and operational expense is probably increasing. So that means he was realizing that they had too much inventory on hand at the plant, which was causing their operational expense to increase as well. By page 119 in ââ¬Å"The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvementâ⬠we have not seen what Alexââ¬â¢s discovery about the inventory has does for the plant. The third constraint for the manufacturing plant is supplier because of all of the backed up orders. When there is a supplier constraint then it has a long lead-time, unreliable, and/or substandard quality. This is what is happening at the manufacturing plant because of how overdue the products are by the time they are finished. Since they have so many backed up orders it causes for the potential of making money to decrease and the likelihood of those customers to come back to the plant for more services to decrease. Theatre 101s performance Essay Example For Students
Theatre 101s performance Essay On 20th May 2009, I saw Theatre 101s performance of their self written play Star Crossed Lovers from Verona. It is a comedy based on the works of William Shakespeare written in the style of an Elizabethan Drama and Commedia DellArte and is about three different stories of love and betrayal taken from Romeo Juliet, Much Ado about Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew. The story focused around two lovers who wished to be married with the disapproval of two elders who are trying to prevent them; this is a typical Comedia DellArte plot. The play made me consider these issues of love and betrayal and question how funny love can really be. The director showed this through a lot of comedic movement. There were also issues concerning old age and how when two people are in love, nothing can separate them no matter what their age. It made me question why the elders were trying to stop the innmorati from getting married and how that in todays society this still happens.Ã This was the basic stage layout. The play was performed in an amphitheatre style area. The actors made exits from both sides and sometimes moved all the way round the back of the stage to re-enter. They did so in an over the top way, making the audience aware that they were back on stage. The carpet was where the majority of scenes took place and was used for the sleepers to lie on, representing the woods. A wooden ladder, which was occasionally moved around, represented a cherry tree that Arcchelino narrated from. The circular stage behind them was raised higher which suggested that the scene took place in a richer place. Fancy chairs, a table covered in silky purple cloth and wine bottles were used to emphasize this wealth. As a whole, the set was very simple which is what a typical Comedia DellArte performance would be like; the characters and their costumes would mostly tell the story. It was also a travelling theatre so this was an appropriate staging.Ã Comedia DellArte is all about Stock Characters and exaggerated gestures. The director showed this through how the characters behaved, their use of voice and body language. An example of this is when Flavio used large hand gestures to express his love for Isabella and kneeled before his mother to suggest respect for her. As well as being very expressive with his arms and hands, Flavio and his lover often pulled overly dramatic poses to show to the audience their youth and passion for one another. They rarely made contact with each other and instead used over the top air kissing. The impression I got was that these two characters were almost flirting with the audience, constantly in dramatic positions which showed that they were as much as in love with themselves as they were with each other. Arcchelino, the narrator, often stood above the characters and climbed on a ladder so that he was looking over the scene, commenting on behaviour and separated from it. When he moved, the mask always pointed first, with the body following which gave the impression they were spying. There was a contrast in how the Spanish Captain moved and spoke in the first and last scenes. He began trying to make himself seen all the time, walking in large strides and taking up a lot of space on the stage. These movements suggested he was a show off and made himself appear strong which is far from his true character. His voice was also quite loud and overpowering in order to get the most attention. When revealed as the villain, he tries to escape and is kicked to the ground which shows to the audience he is in fact a coward and inferior to everyone else. The (unimpressive) Spanish accent had disappeared as the director wanted to show he was also a total fraud. .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 , .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .postImageUrl , .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 , .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03:hover , .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03:visited , .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03:active { border:0!important; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03:active , .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03 .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u32182dae63d16046ff7d228f37459e03:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Audience enjoyed watching the play EssayThe masks are a large part of Comedia DellArte; they represent the characters and show their emotions through how they are made. Dottore wore a mask with an extremely long nose which shows stupidity and the nose was at the centre of his movements which were much exaggerated with little control. The lovers, Isabella and Flavio, wore white masks with rosy cheeks which showed their innocence and purity. The older characters had darker masks which were more shrivelled up. Arcchelino had a pointed nose to suggest a more devious personality. When Pantalone was being foolish, his mask changed to something clown-like; white with a large red nose which gave the impression he was being ridiculous in his actions. I found by watching that in Comedia DellArte the longer the nose, the stupider the character! I also noticed that because each actor wore a mask, they were not able to use facial expressions so exaggerated the movement of their bodies and head to show emotion. An example of this was when Isabella was annoyed with Flavio; she jilted her head away from him and stamped her feet. The costumes were very Elizabethan and were used to show a characters status.Ã Dottore was dressed in simple baggy clothing to suggest that he is poor. The Spanish Captain wore a military style costume big and bold to stand out from everyone else and look stronger than he actually is. In a traditional Commedia DellArte production, the lovers would wear the latest fashion and Star Crossed Lovers was no exception; they both wore expensive clothes that showed off their wealth to the audience. The costumes were also similar colours to show their affinity; light blue clothes which suggested youthfulness and freedom which changed later on to red a symbol for passion. A change in costume also revealed that Isabella was showing off. The widow wore a veil to show she was in mourning and grand clothes to suggest she had higher status, plus the fact that she was allowed to sit down also showed she was above the rest.Ã The props were quite minimalistic but still played an important part in the production. Isabella was nearly always fiddling with a handkerchief which showed the audience that she was young and girlish. She also had a letter which she ripped up and threw into the audience which broke down the fourth wall because she was involving them in her annoyance. The Spanish Captain carried shopping bags at one point that revealed to the audience he was vein and his preoccupation with money and appearance. He also had a small dagger that he never used; the size of this weapon indicated that he had little power and was harmless despite his heroic title.Ã Pantalones physicality changed along with his voice when he was mocking and pretending to be an old lady; it was high pitched and quieter compared to when he was the arrogant rich man. Isabella had an annoyingly high pitched voice that was very girly and when she was cross, her voice was more piercing and precise which showed she had mood swings and always wanted to get her own way. Although the play was slightly hard to understand, the audience could relate to the issues addressed in it; Shakespeare was very good at getting these messages across and Commedia DellArte is an excellent style of theatre for comedy and improvisation. I found that the play, at times, lost concentration from the audience. It was quite a young audience and it might have suited the age range if the play was more updated. On the other hand, that would have ruined the traditional style of theatre it was being performed in. The atmosphere was great on the night; a moment that stuck in my mind was when the two elders snuggled up in the woods and made love; it was a simple, innocent piece of humour and the noises coming from a cast member in the audience (a Brechtian style technique) were quite random!

A view from the bridge by Arthur Miller Essay Example
A view from the bridge by Arthur Miller Paper Consider the importance of Italian loyalty in the play A view from the bridge by Arthur Miller. Daniel Bishop In the play A View From The Bridge Arthur Miller constantly conveys the extreme moral importance of loyalty towards others, be it strangers or close family in a closely linked Italian-American community in 1950s Brooklyn. Eddie Carbone values and honours these unwritten laws as much as anyone else, but despite warnings, his own desperation and selfishness slowly leads him to reject these values and therefore suffer the harsh Italian justice of the people that once stood by him. Alfieris opening speech gives us a brief insight into the ways of this Italian community. He describes how people are still very Italian, keeping to superstitions when he says, I often think that behind that superstitious little nod of theirs lie three thousand years of distrust; this also shows how long they can hold a grudge, being very honourable. He also mentions how people are more than willing to take the law into their own hands, due to honour and vengeance when he states, Oh, there were many here who where justly shot by unjust men. Justice is very important here. Later we also learn how close the community is and how they all know each other and each others business. He also gives a little hint of a long, drawn out event that is very bad and will probably end in pain when he says, another lawyer, quite differently dressed, heard the same complaint and sat there as powerless as I, and watched it run its bloody course. This is referring to Eddies deterioration of character The first, real explanation of the severity of Italian loyalty is learnt in the Carbone household at the beginning of Act One. The family is at the dinner table discussing the arrival of the illegal immigrants; this is significant because one of the most serious acts of betrayal is telling immigration about hidden illegal immigrants. Eddie stresses the seriousness of not telling anyone because of the chance of being caught, as stated earlier, everyone knows everyones business. This is shown when Eddie states; if you said it you knew it, if you didnt say it you didnt know it. Eddie also recalls a story of a boy who snitched about his hidden uncle, his own family turned on him, they spat on him in the street, which means they no longer have any respect for him and is not considered part of the family or community. This shows the severity of the communitys own justice system, and how betrayal and dishonouring is one of the worst crimes in their eyes. This story is ironic as Eddie does exactly the same thing, but with worse consequences, therefore making him a hypocrite. Eddie clearly obeys these laws of the community for now. The whole reason he is taking in these immigrants is out of loyalty. He tells Catherine, just remember, kid, you can quicker get back a million dollars that was stole than a word you gave away. This shows the Italians strong grudge again. As an audience, by now have taken in the seriousness of Italian values and the responsibilities that come with them. Marco introduces a new aspect of Italian loyalty through his character, the way he acts and communicates with different characters differently. He is obviously polite to Eddie and has great respect for him for taking him and his brother in, taking the blankets from my bed as it is put by Eddie later. There isnt much contact between Marco and Beatrice and Catherine, but he obviously loves his brother. Marco loves his family so much that the whole reason he has come to America, the land of opportunities to earn money for his extremely poor family, this shows the importance of family. Marco is extremely grateful and doesnt want to offend Eddie, he even tells his brother to be quiet quite harshly so as not to offend him, there is a profound show of loyalty throughout this scene, Eddie has taken in these two strangers at great risk without question or want of reward purely out of loyalty to Beatrice and her family. At the end of Act One we see the growing tension caused by Catherine and Rodolphos relationship boil over slightly. Eddie has become hostile out of jealousy and openly questions Rodolphos sexuality, Eddie has given the hint to the audience that he will be responsible, or at least partly for the catastrophic end of the play. Marco acts cool and doesnt notice (or ignores) the tension until the boxing incident which everyone thinks went a bit far, but the tension is lowered but coffee and conversation, yet, out of loyalty to his brother, Marco still feels the need to subliminally challenge Eddie with the chair incident, giving a warning that he has the power to stop Eddie should this go any further and that if it comes to choosing sides he will defend his brothers honour. Here stage direction representing this; Marco is face to face with Eddie, a strained tension gripping his eyes and jaw, his neck stiff, the chair raised like a weapon over Eddies head and he transforms what might appear like a glance of warning into a smile of triumph, and Eddies grin vanishes as he absorbs this look. At the beginning of Act Two Eddie acts out his feelings towards Catherine and Rodolpho in a drunken rage, the audience can make their own judgements upon this but most will loose a lot of respect for Eddie, as do the characters. Eddie still denies his feelings and acts and his reasons for them but no one is convinced and this incriminates him further. Marco still doesnt do anything about this, possibly because he believes it was the alcohol. We have now seen the change Eddie has gone through, all his morals and values which he upheld at the start of the play have all but deteriorated, and worse, he doesnt realise or care, all he thinks about is himself and how to get himself out of situations. All he wants is his respect and dignity, which everyone agrees he doesnt deserve. Alfieri shows great sense of loyalty as he is a man of the law but still believes that Eddie shouldnt turn them in because of trust, loyalty and the unwritten code. Despite Alfieris harsh warnings (which are very accurate) Eddie ignores him and does what he thinks is best and commits one of the ultimate acts of betrayal, the audience now reflects on how serious Eddie was with Catherine about secrecy and wonder how this change of face took place. Alfieris warnings were not unlike Eddies story about the young boy at the start, Alfieri says; even those who understand you will turn against you, even the ones who feel the same will despise you! Alfieri somehow understands Eddies feelings and situation very well. In the final scene, Eddie has committed the betrayal and everyone reacts how the audience would expect, everyone loathes Eddie and has turned their backs on him, yet Eddie feels some remorse as immigration knocks at the door. This is all to much for Marco, and because this would result in sending him home he will not be able to provide for his family and in theory Eddie has killed his family, Marco spits on Eddie in the street, this shows that Eddie has committed a horrible act against the community. Catherine now hates Eddie, understandably, she even says; Hes a rat! this must affect Eddie greatly because he did it so he could be closer to her. What is very odd is that Beatrice is still loyal to Eddie, as she will not go to the wedding under his command, this doesnt necessarily mean she still loves him but is possibly still upholding her wedding vows and the loyalty of being a wife. Marco however wants blood, he is eager to reclaim justice and take the law into his own hands as Alfieri described at the beginning. This, coupled with Eddies demand for respect inevitably leads to the confrontation, neither have anything to loose and through Eddies death his soul is purified and justice is done in the eyes of the community. Alfieris closing speech describes how no one wants what they cant have without risk, unlike Eddie and everyone is better off this way. This play has tested the extremes of Italian loyalty and how important it is otherwise you simply dont fit in, also how severe the punishments are. Through Eddie the community and the audience become more aware of these things and are reminded why they live by their rules.

Anabolic Steroids Medicine Essay Sample
Anabolic Steroids Medicine Essay Sample Anabolic Steroids Medicine Essay Example Anabolic Steroids Medicine Essay Example Nowadays, the question of potential legalization of anabolic steroids is discussed in various scientific circles. Current paper deals with all main aspects of this issue evaluating the arguments for and against legalization. Legal issues, such as the access to free competition and equal rights of all sportsmen, are examined. In general, the critical analysis of various positions demonstrates that anabolic steroids as well as other performance enhancers should not be allowed because all sportsmen have to be in equal initial conditions, and all forms of illegal advantages should be strictly prohibited. Should Performance Enhancers (Anabolic Steroids) Be Allowed in Sports? The utilitarian arguments regarding potential advantages of steroids legalization are examined and their logical flaws are specified. Some broad sociological and economic aspects are present for the complex understanding of the situation, and the paper explains their relation to legal issues. In general, the paper contributes to understanding of sports law as it shows that no conflict between utilitarian arguments and basic individual rights and liberties exists. First of all, it is necessary to briefly outline the current status of performance-enhancing drugs in sports. Nowadays, the use of steroids or other drugs is officially considered immoral. Therefore, it is strictly prohibited by all major sports organizations, including the International Olympic Committee. The supporters of legalization claim that the use of drugs does not affect competition more than modern equipment that also creates advantages for some sportsmen (Atkinson, 2011). However, such comparison is invalid for several reasons: Firstly, the supposed violation of law and rights of others in one area does not make such violations in other spheres moral. Secondly, the use of modern equipment really creates additional advantages for some sportsmen, but it is an example of fair competition because it is allowed by sports regulations and it does not violate the rights of others. At the same time, the use of drugs violates the rights of other sportsmen who follow regulations and thus creates unfair advantages. The relevant aspect in this context is not whether some actions or procedures create potential advantages or not but rather their influence on the rights of other parties involved. The opposite position about prohibiting everything that creates any sort of additional advantages will lead to a contradiction as the whole training process and the essence of sports per se aims at demonstrating higher results than other participants (i.e. demonstrating oneââ¬â¢s advantages). Thus, the factors that increase sportsmenââ¬â¢s results should not be prohibited on the basis of such positive impact. However, from this statement does not follow that all types of stimulators are performance enhancers. One of main sports goals is demonstrating the highest achievements of human body and spirit. For example, viewers are interested not in high speed per se but in understanding what speed is attainable for individuals that follow the generally accepted rules. Consequently, the abolition of any restrictions will lead to the absence of sports ideas and its substitution by machinesââ¬â¢ competition. Thus, the decision about the potential regulations and prohibitions should be based on the structure of all participantsââ¬â¢ rights. As the International Olympic Committee and other similar organizations always explicitly state which drugs are prohibited, it demonstrates the rules for all sportsmen and established the boundaries of fair competition. Another argument of supporters of legalization refers to the empirical fact that performance enhancers have been using throughout history even in Ancient Times. Thus, they claim that as enhancers cannot be completely avoided, they should be legalized. However, this statement contains a logical error, as well. The fact of regulationsââ¬â¢ violation does not make such violations desirable. For example, stealing is also observed throughout history, however, it does not make it legal or socially desirable. Although there is a fraction of people willing to obtain unfair advantages, such practices should not be legalized. On the contrary, they may help to differentiate within the whole set of participants and exclude those sportsmen who violate the rights of others. Another possible argument in favor of legalization refers to the fact that doping control is very expensive and these funds may be used more effectively (Atkinson, 2011). However, it seems to be unsupported, as well. It is correct that control efforts (that include not only doping control during competition) lead to additional expenses. Moreover, such funds could be directed to other fields if the problem of unfair competition did not exist. However, it exists and requires additional controlling efforts. Using an analogy, it may be stated that the absence of criminal activities could allow reducing expenses associated with police activities. At the same time, the existence of such expenses under the current conditions does not seem unreasonable. Anti-doping authorities often explain that all sportsmen should have equal opportunities. However, this statement should be correctly interpreted. The main idea is not removing all sources of inequality (as it is impossible even theoretically, as well as it negates the essence of sports competition) but respecting the rights of all participants. In this way, the boundaries of fair competition are identical for all people. It corresponds to the meaning of fair competition. An additional ethical aspect should be clarified. Nowadays, professional sports demonstrate the highest results of the human body without any artificial performance enhancers. Thus, people willing to improve or at least maintain their health may participate in professional sports. However, it will be impossible if anabolic steroids are legalized. As they artificially increase oneââ¬â¢s sports results, it will be evident a priori that professional sportsmen will have significant health problems in the future. Therefore, a large number of potential sportsmen will refuse to select this occupation. Moreover, viewers prefer understanding professional sport as a tool of promoting a healthy lifestyle, and the negation of health in the initial instructions will not guarantee the necessary interest within the population. If performance enhancers are allowed, it will almost exclude the majority of developing countries from competition. At the present moment, the countries with high standard of living have some advantages; however, other countries also demonstrate significant results in some sports spheres. If legalization is adapted, the financial factor will become the main one and the global interest to sports will decline as only several the most financially successful countries will compete in all kinds of sports. The International Olympic Committee declares that sport should be promoted all over the world and the realization of this principle may become problematic in case of legalization (Werner Hatton, 2011). Thus, it is evident that there is no contradiction between utilitarian arguments that try to satisfy the interests of all parties involved and the legal perspective. If rights of all sportsmen are protected, the general social satisfaction is maximized, as well. Therefore, it is reasonable to concentrate on expanding the principles of fair competition to all spheres, as well as providing the strict control over the fulfillment of these regulations. It is possible to use random statistical selection for doping control in some minor sports events while during the Olympic Games and various world championships all participants should pass the test procedures. Current system of double-testing seems to be reasonable as it reduces the probability of error to almost zero. As all sportsmen understand that any violations may be immediately detected, they will modify their behavior accordingly and the temptation to use drugs will decrease. Although sports committees cannot determine the specific actions of all sportsmen, they may affect their incentive structures that indirectly influence their actual behavior (Donahue et al., 2007). It seems that the number of regulations should be minimal, but they should be adequately enforced. In particular, sports committees should outline the list of prohibited drugs and make this information available for all interested people. Then, the effective control systems should be introduced and the main attention should be paid to such sports events as the Olympic Games. Sports authorities should not make any value or moral judgments but be entirely concentrated on the legal perspective. All moral conclusions may be formulated by the public and it will lead to higher sports popularity worldwide. It occurs due to the fact that both viewers and officials want to receive the results of doping tests that will confirm the absence of any prohibited drugs in the blood or body of a given sportsman (Atkinson, 2011). Thus, the advocates of this position suggest that if anabolic steroids are legalized, no additional confirmation is needed, and the winners may receive their fame immediately. However, it is necessary to examine this position in detail: Firstly, the goal of sports committees is not maximizing the psychological satisfaction of the winners at any price but ensuring the proper following of all generally approved requirements. Secondly, it is unclear whether this satisfaction would actually increase as most people prefer winning in fair competition. Thirdly, sports fans usually see sport events as an example of equal opportunities (at least, in the legal sense). Thus, the legalization of steroids may negatively affect their interest and ultimate demand for such events (Ozdemir et al., 2005). As a result, sports competitions may become less prestigious and may generate fewer amounts of money and other privileges (sponsor contracts, advertizing proposals, the overall reputation in society, etc.) for the winners. Taking into account all these considerations, it may be expected that all participants (and especially the future champions) are interested in fair competition and equal standards for all sportsmen. It seems that regulations and sports instructions should not create additional risks and threats for sportsmen. The nature of modern professional sport is such that substantial health risks are present in any case. However, their amount should not be artificially increased. It is evident that legalization of anabolic steroids will make the traditional (without using any drugs) winning of any serious championships absolutely impossible. Nowadays, many sportsmen are examples and role models for young people, but it seems that the situation may change if the public is aware that all champions use steroids. Therefore, the potential legalization may have negative consequences for the US society in general. Theoretically, there is another alternative to the issue under consideration. For example, two leagues may exist. The first one will operate on the traditional basis and anabolic steroids and other performance enhancers will be prohibited. In the second league, the use of drugs will be legal and sportsmen from different leagues will compete only within their leagues. Such proposal is legally coherent as no one is forced to use drugs and is free to choose the optimal alternative from his/her point of view. The viewersââ¬â¢ rights are protected as well because they may choose any league they like and the use of steroids in one of them is known from the very beginning. Although this option is possible from the legal perspective, it is not highly plausible that these two leagues will emerge in the near future. Such separation will not allow economizing substantial financial resources as strict doping control in one of the leagues will be still needed. Moreover, some expenses will even increase as it will be necessary to organize much more events and forums for both leagues. However, the consumer demand for these events is limited and the profitability rates may decrease. As sports fans prefer determining the only champion in each kind of sport (that will be impossible in the new format), it is not likely that this idea will be supported by the public. Various health-oriented organizations may explicitly argue against any sports projects that allow using doping. It may negatively affect the reputation of sports organizations and lead to numerous social conflicts in sport. Thus, under the current state of the consumer demand and public preferences, it is unlikely that the idea of two separate leagues may be realized in the actual practice. The advocates of legalization also suggest that it may help to solve problems of the Hall of Fame voting. Even the smallest doping suspicion of an athlete may not allow him/her being selected. Therefore, some experts propose to legalize drugs to make this process more clear and timely. However, the problem of determining the best representatives of some profession exists not only in sports and it is important to verify all relevant aspects in order to guarantee the correspondence of a given candidate to the existing rules. For example, the works of all scientists are verified in relation to their originality; if any plagiarism issues are found, it leads to serious negative consequences for a given scientist. In fact, he/she cannot expect to receive any significant reward in the future due to his/her reputation as a result of such issues. The similar principles may be observed in sports. Federations and public in general wish to have evidences that a given athlete follows all recommendations and does not violate the rights of other participants. Although such test procedures require time and financial expenses, they are the necessary attribute of any fair competition (Eber, 2009). It seems that the function of the Hall of Fame is to praise the most talented and successful sportsmen rather than facilitating the process of inclusion of potential candidates. The effectiveness of doping control depends on the actual implementation of the main regulations. There are two main options that exist in this context. The first one is large government involvement. The second one is independent regulations of corresponding sports leagues. The supporters of the first initiative suggest that the government may be more efficient in enforcing all relevant rules and even develop new legal obligations for the citizens. However, it seems that the second option may generate much better results for several reasons: Firstly, the government operates on the basis of tax-collected funds. It means that the redistribution of wealth takes place and involuntary actions are observed. The legal and sociological theories show that social systems work more productively if they are organized on a completely voluntary basis. Secondly, independent leagues are better aware of all internal problems and are more responsive to the external challenges. The government may use a large number of experts, but their overall coordination will not be based on the profit-and-loss system and higher bureaucratization may emerge (Showalter, 2007). Thirdly, independent leagues are interested in timely decisions of the existing problems and try to find the most rational decisions from the social and economic point of view. At the same time, government agencies do not have strong incentive structures for searching timely solutions and their decisions are mostly based on the political desirability rather than economic calculation. Thus, it seems that government involvement in this process should be minimized as it negatively affects the realization of basic sports principles. Unfortunately, it is problematic to completely separate sport from politics as during the Olympic Games and other forums sportsmen represent not only them and their team but the country in general. Therefore, some political pressure from national governments is often present. However, it is reasonable to limit government presence in all sports spheres as it negatively affects the implementation of principles of fair competition (Showalter, 2007). Moreover, the prohibition of anabolic drugs may be effectively enforced without the government participation in this process. As these regulations may be introduced by independent leagues, penalties may be different in various kinds of sports. At the same time, it does not constitute serious problems because each kind of sports has its specifics that should be reflected in corresponding rules. The most important thing is the recognition of the illegal nature of anabolic steroids and the understanding of introducing corresponding penalties for those sportsmen who try to receive unfair competitive advantages. It seems that not all sports federations pay the necessary attention to the problem of doping. In particular, soccer and some other team sports federations do not suggest it to be this issue their main responsibility. Although the net effect of doping in team sports seems to be less than in individual ones, the respect to other sportsmenââ¬â¢s rights should be maintained in all sports spheres. Thus, soccer and other sports federations should ensure the fulfillment of all fair competition requirements. It will increase the sportsââ¬â¢ popularity among people worldwide and may generate additional revenues for federations. The close analysis of various arguments regarding the potential legalization of anabolic steroids has shown that they are unsupported and have substantial logical errors. All athletes should have equal rights and follow the generally accepted rules that are developed by the corresponding federations. The analogy of anabolic steroids with the modern equipment is incorrect because equipmentââ¬â¢s advantages are not based on the violation of other peopleââ¬â¢s rights. Although doping control is expensive, it is the necessary element of expenses because all sports fans are interested in fair competition. Their demand for sports events is based on the assumption that all participants have equal opportunities. If this assumption is not followed, many viewers will shift their demand to other spheres. The potential legalization of performance enhancers will create serious problems for developing countries and will reduce the overall level of competition. The analysis demonstrates that there is no contradiction between the basic legal rights and utilitarian arguments. Sportsmen may be accepted to the Hall of Fame only when their doping tests are thoroughly evaluated and it is correct as only those athletes who follow all regulations may receive the chance of being selected. It is determined that the control over the fulfillment of anti-doping requirements should be delegated to independent leagues rather than national governments. Sports leagues are better aware of the local situation and are highly motivated in finding the most timely and efficient solution. Some differences among various sports federations may exist, but all of them should share the basic principles of doping control and penalties. It is especially relevant for soccer and other team sports federations. In any case, the use of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancers should not be allowed in sport.
